I dream of a future where Ethiopia reclaims its place as a global leader, a nation as powerful and influential as it was during the Axumite Empire. This dream fuels my mission to build billion-dollar companies that not only showcase Ethiopia’s potential but actively shape its rise on the world stage. The name "Adulis" represents more than a company—it’s a vision. Inspired by the ancient port that once connected Ethiopia to the world, Adulis is my way of creating modern gateways for the world to see Ethiopia’s strength, innovation, and creativity. For me, this isn’t just about business; it’s about transforming a dream into reality. It’s about paving the way for Ethiopia’s future by building something lasting—something that uplifts others, opens doors, and sets the foundation for a thriving nation once again. The journey starts now, but the horizon is limitless.
I’m the type of person who thrives on exploring different areas—my mind is always searching for new things to learn, do, and connect. Ethiopia is home for me, and that has always been my foundation. The question then becomes: What are the areas of business I want to focus on?
The answer lies in connecting my personality, skills, and passions. From travel and art to coffee and media, every venture I’m involved in reflects something I’ve been passionate about for years. Whether it’s building Dejene Ethiopia Tours into a high-end travel and concierge service or sharing stories through my YouTube channels— Dejene Ethiopia Tours, Dejene Hodes, and The Next Question Show—each project allows me to showcase Ethiopia’s beauty, culture, and incredible potential.
I love working across different fields, finding the connections between them, and weaving them into something meaningful. Everything I’ve been building—from showcasing Ethiopia’s art and coffee to unlocking its untapped business opportunities—aligns with my personality and vision. This is more than just business for me; it’s a way of life, and I’m excited to see how all these pieces come together to tell Ethiopia’s story.
My journey began with humble beginnings in a small village near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Those early years were marked by darkness and uncertainty—my father left before I was born, and my mother struggled to provide for us. I spent much of my childhood moving between my mother and grandmother, finding moments of joy in the simplicity of rural life—playing in open f ields and imagining a world without limits
At the age of five, everything changed. I developed tuberculosis of the spine, which severely restricted my movement. Within a year, I faced unimaginable loss—the passing of both my mother and grandmother. With no immediate family able to take me in, I moved between relatives, searching for stability. Eventually, my aunt stepped in and took a leap of faith, giving me the chance to start anew.
Those years were incredibly difficult, but they shaped the resilience and ambition that define me today. From those early adversities, I learned the value of perseverance and the strength it takes to keep moving forward, no matter how overwhelming the challenges may seem.
At one of the lowest points in my life, my aunt made the heartbreaking decision to leave me at a church in Addis Ababa. She hoped that the kindness of strangers might offer what she couldn’t provide. During this time, I faced what seemed like insurmountable challenges, battling severe illness and abandonment.
Eventually, I was found gravely ill and taken to Mother Teresa’s Mission for the Sick and Destitute. It was a place where the compassion of others became a lifeline. This marked the darkest chapter of my life, but also a profound turning point. It was there that I met Dr. Rick Hodes, an American doctor whose kindness and generosity changed everything.
This transformative period taught me the incredible power of compassion and second chances. It became the catalyst for a complete change in direction, showing me that even in the darkest moments, there’s always the potential for light.
Life has a way of surprising you when you least expect it. Meeting Dr. Rick Hodes was one of those moments. His decision to open his heart and home to me was life-changing. Thanks to him, I was accepted for a high-risk surgery at Scottish Rite in 2002, a moment that would change my life forever.
The surgery didn’t just heal my physical ailments—it opened up a world of possibilities. For the f irst time, I could dream of a future that wasn’t defined by limitations. Six months later, I returned to Ethiopia with a new sense of purpose and hope.
That experience was my first major transformation. It taught me how even the toughest hurdles can become opportunities for growth. It was a pivotal moment that continues to inspire everything I do today.

After my surgery and recovery, I completed my schooling and began a journey that spanned two worlds—traveling between Ethiopia and Dallas, Texas, over the next decade. From 2002 to 2012, this period became a mosaic of learning for me. I gained insights into the intricacies of business, the depth of personal relationships, and the importance of resilience. Each experience added to my resolve to contribute to Ethiopia’s story in a meaningful way.
This stage of my life was pivotal. It marked my transition from a past defined by loss and uncertainty to one shaped by education, opportunity, and self-discovery. It was during this time that I laid the foundation for my next big chapter: pursuing my dream of making a lasting impact in Ethiopia.
